Thomas Luther Herbert

He became a resident of Penryn, Placer County in 1882 where he purchased a home and lived until 1893, when he bought a ranch of thirty acres one mile south of town, which he has transformed into a highly productive orchard of peaches, pears and plums and since 1917, he has been engaged as a ripe fruit shipper. He was born in Lampeter, South Wales on Feb. 16, 1851.
He received a certificate to teach school in 1867 when sixteen years old. . . .he completed his teaching credential at Kirksville Normal School, graduating in 1880. Here he was a classmate of Gen. J. J. Pershing. He was principal in Placer Co. for nearly twenty-five years. Fourteen years of the time as principal of schools at Ophir. For eleven years he served on the Placer Co. Board of Education. He was married at Ophir Dec. 24, 1884 to Miss Eliza F. Jamison, a daughter of Stephen Jamison, a California pioneer of 1849 who came around Cape Horn. Mr. Jamsion settled at Ophir in 1852 and became a pioneer in the fruit industry. Mrs. Herbert was also a teacher before her marriage.
