NEWCASTLE HOTEL

Azor Newton Page

The only known photo of the Newcastle Hotel, which burned down in the fire of 1900.
It was replaced by the Pomona Hotel.

Excerpts from "Newcastle Gem of the Foothills" by Leonard Davis

. . .The town also boasted a fine hotel for use of Eastern buyers as well as locals, which was first operated by Azor Newton Page,(note: originally from Michigan) but which by 1879 was run by D. W. Wilson. Mr. Page had come to Newcastle via Penryn in c. 1870. One of the first to realize the potential of Newcastle as an important fruit growing and shipping center, he operated what for the times was an elegant hotel. . .

As the fruit shipping business expanded and the town began to grow, the astute Mr. Page disposed of the hotel interests in favor of entering the real estate field. He was probably Newcastle’s first full time realtor, and his "Page Addition" was one of the first subdivisions to be added to the growing town. Azor Page one of Newcastle’s earlist promoters, died in 1884 at the relatively young age of 49. He is buried in the Newcastle Cemetery. Page Street perpetuates the memory of this almost forgotten early Newcastle entrepreneur.
